Why wellbeing in the workplace matters

Employers have a pivotal role to play in providing healthy and inclusive workplaces. By creating and promoting a long-term wellbeing plan in your business, you are setting the business, shareholders, employees and customers up for success, longevity and fulfillment.

Supporting employees to concentrate on their own physical health and wellbeing is vital to encouraging economic growth and sustaining a strong, productive and resilient workforce. For the employer it means higher productivity through fewer days lost to illness and stress.

Changes to the workplace, being able to access and create awareness of available local and national services, promoting wellbeing alongside addressing mental and physical health issues all increase resilience to stress. Employee wellbeing boosts employee engagement, reduces sickness and absence and encourages higher performance and productivity. Employers with wellbeing plans in places have better brand image, retention and recruitment.

There are many ways to create a wellbeing strategy that will suit your business. Using Working Well from East Riding of Yorkshire Council will help set up and support you in implementing employee wellbeing inside your business.

What is Working Well?

Working Well wants to work with local businesses in their efforts to support a healthy workforce.

Working Well will support local businesses to be aware of and have access to health and wellbeing services and initiatives and encourage businesses to work together in a network and share good practice.

Working Well will assist employers to focus on supporting employees to ensure that the workforce remains healthy, engaged and motivated. Employers may have to embrace different ways of working, creating exciting and flexible working environments that inspire staff. The response to COVID-19 has brought new challenges that will no doubt have long-term effects on employee's mental, physical and financial wellbeing. The health and wellbeing of employees has never been more important.

If you are interested, we'd like to come and talk to you about what you think would work best for your staff and for you as an employer. We will develop an activity plan tailored just for your business and you will then have a direct link to East Riding of Yorkshire Council for future support. Information for Employees

From time to time we may ask you to give us your views about matters relating to health and wellbeing. You don't have to engage, but we would hope you want to. This is likely to be in the format of a paper or electronic survey.

There is a Working Well Employee leaflet available to download. You can also explore all of the groups and services on the find wellbeing page or discover where you are on the mental health scale on the East Riding Healthy Minds section of this website and discover what services could be most beneficial for you.

Health and Wellbeing Champions

There will be the opportunity for employees to become a health and wellbeing champion. A champion is a member of the workplace who supports the health and wellbeing of staff. Champions know their work areas and colleagues and are often best placed to recognise what may work best in their organisation. Champions can also signpost to resources, information and local services and help support health and wellbeing events.

Health and wellbeing champions will also be given the opportunity to attend a Health and Wellbeing Network for local businesses in order to share good practice, working together as a local business community in which the health and wellbeing of employees is given top priority.

Services for local businesses
